Gabriele M, a fast Ferry of the timeless design 40m FlyingCatTM has arrived Fjellstrand.
The vessel is built in 1997, has been sailing for some years in Sicily under Italian Flag, and is now purchased by Cruise Service for operation in Norwegian waters and flag will be changed to NOR.
Fjellstrand will upgrade systems and interiors for the vessel to once again appear in its former glory.
Fjellstrand has been awarded a contract with Alimak for an aluminum elevator shaft that will be installed in the phase 2 of Johan Sverdrup .
This contract comes in addition to the modifications and Extensions already contracted for Phase 2 and currently being constructed at the Omastrand yard.
The shaft for this New contract has a height of approx 52 meters, and represents approximately 45 tons of aluminium.
This continues the good work towards the offhore industry where Fjellstrand has delivered numerous of similar small projects.
Fjellstrand have already delivered six aluminium elevator shafts for phase 1 of this project. Phase 1 is now delivered and will be installed in the North Sea oil field during 2018/2019.

"Kommandøren" was delivered to Fjord 1 on monday 17. december.
The ferry is developed and built by Fjellstrand and will eventually operate the route between Halhjem and Våge in Hordaland not far from the yard premises.
However, this operation will commence when Fjord1 take over this operation from 1. january 2020. Until then the Ferry will service other routes in the Fjord1 portfolio.
The contract was signed in april 2017 for the designing and building of a fully electric, battery powered Ferry.
This is a larger and further developed version of the MF Ampere, which in 2015 made history being the worlds first car ferry to be driven solely by batteries. The new vessel is equipped for both higher speed and longer range with its route of 12,5 km (6,75 nm) being the longest route in the world to be operated fully on batteries.
MF Ampere has now been in operation for almost four years and has sailed a distance equivalent to 6 times around the equator, giving valuable experiences to the further development of zero emission technology for ferries and ships.
The fully electric ferry is 87,5 meters long and has a beam of 20,8 meters and will carry 120 cars, 12 trucks and 350 passengers and for its temporary operation the first year it will be powered by its onboard backup generators prepared for bio diesel.
In order to optimize for lowest possible energy consumption the vessel is built in aluminium with a catamaran hull.
Zero emission and low energy consumption are key elements valued in the tenders, and this ferry makes it possible to run even longer ferry operations on batteries alone.
At Fjellstrand, and also among people on the west coast of Norway, the name Kommandøren will evoke emotions and memories of the first FlyingCat40 from Fjellstrand delivered almost 30 years ago to Fylkesbåtane i Sognog Fjordane, now Fjord1. The FlyingCat 40 with its iconic design created a completely new style and era in fast ferry design. Ampere also changed the thinking in ferry design by being the first to introduce batteries charged from shore electric grid.
"We wish the success of the new Kommandøren to follow the path of the former Kommandøren" says Sales/ R&D Manager Edmund Tolo.
Another milestone for the building of our second battery ferry was reached when monting the superstructure on the hull alongside at our Omastrand premises.
Built in low weight aluminium, the partly furbished and completed superstructure could be lifted in one piece.
After thorough planning the full operation was done in only 4 hours.
The hull for the newest zero emission ferry for Fjord1 arrives Norway and will stop at Halsnøy Dokk for painting and mounting of thrusters.
This summer the superstructure, which is already built and equipped at the Omastrand yard, will be mounted and the remaining equipment will be installed alongside the quay at Omastrand.

The fully electric ferry will have a length of 87,5 meters and a beam of 20,8 meters and will carry 120 cars, 12 trucks and a passenger saloon to accommodate 296 passengers. In order to optimize for lowest possible energy consumption the vessel will be built in aluminium with a catamaran hull.
The catamaran Renøy was sold by Boreal earlier this winter and has spent some time inside our heated workshops for service, smaller upgrades and conversions. 20.march it was on blue waters again and is now under way to start a new trade in German waters. We wish North Frisian Offshore and Adler Cat the best of luck in the new operation.
Fjellstrand is awarded a new contract by Heistek and Statoil for an aluminium elevator shaft to be installed on board the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel that will be located on the Johan Castberg field in the Barents Sea.
Delivery is due in October 2018 and will be built on the Omastrand yard where a battery driven aluminium ferry for Fjord1 already is under construction.
The elevator shaft is a 18 meters high construction of approx 15 tons and comes after a number of similar contracts for offshore installations built at the Fjellstrand yard.

FJELLSTRAND has together with Rogaland County Municipality and other members of NCE Maritime CleanTech been awarded 11.7 Million Euros to develop an all-electric high-speed passenger vessel to operate between Stavanger and Hommersåk on the west coast of Norway. This project aim to revolutionize Norwegian production of zero emission vessels. The project will also conduct two studies for the same type of vessel in London and the inland waterways of Belgium.
A result of good Collaboration: The Norwegian players who will contribute to developing the vessel are all members of Maritime CleanTech. Besides Rogaland County Municipality they are Leirvik, Servogear, Wärtsilä and Hydro Extrusions Norway. Valide and Kolumbus have also taken part in the project.
The vessel will be built by Fjellstrand at Omastrand.
The project will result in a new fully-electric high-speed vessel with zero emissions. In addition, new manufacturing methods will contribute to substantially lower production costs.
The following are also taking part in the project: Wärtsilä Holland (Netherlands), MBNA Thames Clippers (UK), University of Strathclyde (UK), Fraunhofer IEM (Germany), HSVA (Germany) and Waterwegen & Zeekanal NV (Belgium).
The project will commence in the spring when the contract with the European Commission has been signed and it has a duration of four years.
